My dearest Ezra,

Destroy this letter once you’ve read it.

The time is coming. Be strong. You four have friends where you are. They will make themselves known when the time is right—and the time is right now. You must let go of the pain and anger. You will not have room to become more if you are filled with hate. May your Ember burn bright and may your heart remain pure.

Loving you always,

Your father.

I lifted the letter and stuffed it into my mouth. It dissolved and I swallowed it. I knelt on the floor and slid the gun in between my mattress and the springs of the frame. I stared at the door and prayed no one had walked in while I had a gun in my hand. If it were Zyan, I’d be safe. A Controller and I’d be shot where I stood.

Back in bed, I stared at the ceiling. How did my father get a gun into my bunk? At least I knew he was still alive—or at least he was when he’d found a way to get me a weapon. He said I had friends in here. Who are they? Are they the suits? Is it Haider? Maddox? Doc? He could have at least told me who I could trust, because right now as I still felt chunks of Maddox on my skin, I struggled with the concept.

Zyan returned with something to eat and sat on the edge of my bed. I knew he must have had to sneak out of the Hall with it. They never let us take food to our bunks. He had a few pieces of fruit and a bottle of water. He’d tiptoed into the room, his face twisted in pain and concern. He really did care. I knew, deep down, that he’d do more than just die for me. He’d die for us all. I had no choice but to admit that I would do the same for him. I’d step in front of a barrel for him without a second thought. I knew if I died, he’d protect Zow and Flynn. He was nothing like the others in Cinder. He was better than them—all of them.

“You need to eat something, Ezra. We don’t know what their plans are and you may need all the strength you can get,” Zyan said.

I sat up and leaned against my headboard. “Thank you, Zyan.”

“I’m sorry that happened to you today.”

I nodded. “So am I. Abetha didn’t deserve to die.”

“None of us do.”

“Zyan, I have to tell you something, but you have to swear to me that you won’t tell anyone.”

He nodded and pushed in beside me.

“Haider knows that I’m Ember.”

Zyan leaned forward and stared at me. His mouth was open. “How do you know?”

“I can hear his thoughts. In the lunchroom, I could hear him like a whisper. He was talking directly to me. He told me that Johan would kill all of us and our families. He said that once he got the Ember, he would kill everyone anyway.
